DRP Cleaner, Restorer, or Stripper Plus: Which One Does Your Deck Need?

A gray board and a board with old stain clinging to it can both look overdue for a refresh. But they need different prep. Before you buy a deck cleaner or stain remover, look at what’s on the wood now. Are you dealing with dirt and mildew, weathered bare wood, or a coating that needs to come off?

Use DRP Cleaner for dirt, mildew, and routine prep

Start with DRP Deck & Wood Cleaner if the main issue is surface dirt, mold, or mildew. It’s designed to clean new and weathered wood. If your deck is bare and mostly needs a good cleanup before staining, this is the first product I’d look at.

Use DRP Restorer for gray, aged wood

DRP Deck & Wood Restorer is a concentrated prep product for reviving weathered exterior wood. There’s some overlap with Cleaner: both can address staining from mold or mildew. Restorer is the option to look at when the wood itself has grayed and bringing back more of its natural color is a priority. It’s designed to be followed by a brightening step before staining.

Use DRP Stripper Plus when an old finish needs to come off

If you see patches of old stain hanging on beside bare spots, or several layers of finish that need to come off, look at DRP Stripper Plus. It’s designed to remove stubborn oil-based, latex, and acrylic coatings. A separate brightening step isn’t required after Stripper Plus when you use it as directed.

If the old finish is thin, weathered, and transparent, DRP Cleaner & Remover is another option worth testing. It can lift many coatings in that condition.

Test a spot that represents the job

Pick a small, out-of-the-way area that has the same buildup or leftover finish you’re trying to remove. A test on a board that’s already bare won’t tell you how the product handles the stubborn sections. Follow the label directions and check the result before committing to the whole deck.
