Once you’ve prepped a gray, weathered deck, you might want to bring back some warmth without going all the way to a dark brown. Burlington Gold and Tabernacle Harvest are two ways to do that. Burlington Gold adds a light, natural tint. Tabernacle Harvest brings in a more noticeable cedar-brown tone. Here’s how to decide which one to try first.
Burlington Gold: A light tint that lets the wood set the tone
Burlington Gold is a good starting point if you like the color of your wood after prep and want to give it a warmer look. It’s lightly tinted, so the starting color of the wood plays a big part in how it turns out. If you’re working with cedar shakes or older deck boards and want their character to show through, try this one first. See how it looks on a cedar shake home in our Burlington Gold project feature.
Tabernacle Harvest: A warmer finish with more brown
Tabernacle Harvest is the one to sample if you want a more noticeable shift from the color of the bare boards. Its cedar-brown tone is worth comparing against lighter siding or railings, especially if you want the deck floor to stand out a little more. Browse the Tabernacle Harvest project gallery to see it on finished wood.
Test both where you’ll actually see them
Try the two colors side by side on prepared wood. Look at the samples from the back door, where you’ll see the deck against the siding and railings, then compare them up close in sun and shade. If you’ve replaced a few boards, sample an older board and a newer one. The same stain can look different on each.
